Fort Stewart: The Largest Military Installation East of the Mississippi
Fort Stewart covers more than 280,000 acres of coastal Georgia terrain, making it the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River. Located near Hinesville, Georgia, approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, the installation is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, one of the Army's most storied and operationally active combat formations.
For athletic trainers seeking careers in military healthcare, Fort Stewart combines the clinical demands of supporting a high-tempo combat division with the lifestyle advantages of coastal Georgia living. The installation's size, mission profile, and geographic location create a practice environment that is distinct from other H2F sites.
Cognito Systems, a joint venture of Resolution Think and QuarterLine, staffed by PSI, manages athletic trainer positions at Fort Stewart as part of the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) program.
The H2F Program at Fort Stewart
Supporting the 3rd Infantry Division
The 3rd Infantry Division, known as the "Rock of the Marne," maintains a demanding training and deployment cycle. Service members assigned to Fort Stewart prepare for and execute combat operations, which means the physical demands placed on soldiers are among the most intense in the conventional Army.
Athletic trainers embedded within 3rd Infantry Division units encounter a patient population that trains hard, trains often, and sustains the musculoskeletal injuries that accompany sustained high-intensity military operations. Ruck marches through sandy, humid terrain. Live-fire exercises in Georgia's summer heat. Vehicle-mounted operations that produce unique loading patterns and injury profiles.
The H2F program at Fort Stewart places athletic trainers at the brigade level, providing continuity of care with a defined soldier population. You know your patients. You see them daily. You track their progress over months and years, not single clinic visits.
Interdisciplinary Team Structure
Each H2F performance team at Fort Stewart includes athletic trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, dietitians, and cognitive performance specialists. The team-based model ensures comprehensive care coverage and provides built-in professional support for every provider.
Athletic trainers focus on musculoskeletal assessment, injury prevention, therapeutic intervention, and return-to-duty protocols. You collaborate daily with team members whose expertise complements your own, developing coordinated care plans that address the full spectrum of soldier health and performance.
Daily Schedule and Work-Life Balance
What a Typical Day Looks Like
The day begins with the unit's morning physical training period, typically starting early morning. Athletic trainers observe training, provide sideline coverage, and conduct informal screenings during PT. This daily touchpoint with the full unit population is one of the most valuable features of the H2F model.
Following PT, the schedule shifts to individual patient care. Service members with musculoskeletal complaints receive evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Treatment modalities include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, functional movement retraining, taping, and coordination with physical therapists for complex cases.
Afternoons include documentation, team meetings, injury surveillance data analysis, and prevention program development. The workday follows a consistent Monday through Friday pattern with daytime hours. There are no evening clinics, no weekend shifts, and no on-call requirements.
The 40-Hour Week
Athletic trainers at Fort Stewart work 40-hour weeks. This is not aspirational language that erodes under patient demand. The schedule is a structural feature of the H2F program, and it is one of the most frequently cited reasons athletic trainers choose military healthcare over clinical, collegiate, or professional sports settings.
Your evenings are yours. Your weekends are yours. If you have spent years working split shifts, holiday schedules, and 60-hour weeks during peak seasons, the consistency of an H2F schedule represents a fundamental shift in quality of life.
Living in Coastal Georgia
Hinesville and the Surrounding Area
Hinesville is a small city that has grown around Fort Stewart and serves as the primary residential community for installation personnel. The cost of living is significantly below the national average, which means your compensation stretches further than it would in larger metropolitan areas.
Housing options include apartments and rental homes in Hinesville, Liberty County, and the surrounding communities. Many athletic trainers and military families find affordable housing within a short commute of the installation gates.
Savannah
Savannah is 40 miles northeast of Fort Stewart and accessible via Highway 119 and Interstate 16. Georgia's oldest city offers historic architecture, a walkable downtown, restaurants, nightlife, cultural events, and a quality of life that consistently ranks among the best in the Southeast.
For athletic trainers who want the clinical rewards of military healthcare without living in a remote or isolated location, the Fort Stewart-Savannah corridor offers a compelling combination. You work at one of the Army's most important installations and live within reach of a vibrant coastal city.
Climate
Coastal Georgia has a humid subtropical climate with warm temperatures for much of the year. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90 degrees and high humidity levels that create challenging training conditions. Winters are mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing.
The climate shapes the clinical work. Heat-related injury prevention, hydration protocols, and acclimatization planning are ongoing responsibilities for athletic trainers at Fort Stewart, particularly during the summer training months.
